Bell's Palsy - Medical Treatments and Alternative Medicines

Bell's palsy is a paralysis of the facial muscles that control movement and expression. Each year, about 40,000 Americans develop the condition; most are over 40, although the disorder can occur at any age. Paralysis, which occurs on one side of the face, is usually temporary. The symptoms include an inability to close one eye plus weakness and lack of muscle tone on the affected side. The face may feel as if it is twisted, and speaking and eating may become difficult. In some cases, one side of the mouth droops and the senses of taste and hearing are impaired. The eye may also become abnormally dry. Bell's palsy usually develops rapidly, often coming on overnight, but some patients recall a warning pain behind the ear a few hours to a few days before the onset. The paralysis is thought to be caused by a swelling of the facial nerve that runs from the brain to the face. As the nerve swells, it becomes compressed within the surrounding bony enclosure. The underlying cause is unknown, but because Bell's palsy often follows an earache, cold, or other viral infection, some doctors believe that a virus may be involved. Injuries to the head and pregnancy have also been implicated. In80 to 90 percent of cases, Bell's palsy is a temporary condition. If paralysis begins to reverse by the end of the second week, the prognosis for a full recovery is good.

Diagnostic Studies and Procedures

\"Facial Massage\"

Most occurrences can be diagnosed by the characteristic symptoms and their rapid onset. If there is any doubt, a doctor will order X-rays and perhaps a CT scan or MRI of the skull to rule out a tumor, fracture, or bone erosion. Blood tests can help detect a possible underlying infection. If facial paralysis persists, nerve conduction tests or electromyography(EMG) may be ordered to assess the extent of nerve activity and damage.

Bell's Palsy - Medical Treatments and Alternative Medicines

Medical Treatments

Treatment for this condition is some what controversial. Because most cases resolve themselves without therapy, some doctors advise a wait and see policy. Others advocate prompt medical intervention in the hope of shortening the course of the paralysis. If improvement fails to occur within two weeks, treatment is advisable. There are two approaches: The most common entails taking corticosteroid drugs such as prednisone to reduce nerve swelling and inflammation. Typically, the drug is given in high doses for five days, and then tapered off and stopped over the next five days. Sometimes surgery is performed to widen the bony canal that surrounds the facial nerve. But this operation is done only as a last resort.

Alternative Therapies

Alternative therapies for Bell's palsy are even more controversial than those of conventional medicine, because their efficacy is doubtful. Those that are sometimes suggested include.

Acupuncture

Stimulation of meridians controlling nerves in the head and face is said to reduce swelling and reverse paralysis, provided the nerve has not been permanently damaged.

Aromatherapy

Facial massage using aromatic oils can prevent muscle spasms and may speed recovery.

Herbal Medicine

Traditional Chinese herbalists recommend the Pueraria combination, which is made up of kudzu root, mahuang, ginger, jujube fruit, cinnamon, peony root, and licorice for acute numbness of facial nerves, and a combination of cinnamon, atractylodes, and aconite for chronic disorders of these nerves.

Self Treatment

Self care is directed to preventing long term eye damage and alleviating symptoms while awaiting recovery. Because you probably will not be able to blink or close your eye, it should be protected with an eye patch, especially while sleeping. Artificial tears or medicated eyedrops help to alleviate eye dryness. Special facial exercises and self massage can prevent long term contracture and damage to the facial muscles. A physical therapist can prescribe exercises to do at home. Wearing a splint helps to prevent drooping of the lower part of the face. A doctor or physical therapist can supply an appropriate one, or you can fashion your own from a long strip of cotton or linen. Chewing and swallowing may be difficult, so avoid foods that can cause choking. In fact, you may want to switch to a liquid diet until the paralysis disappears.

Other Causes of Facial Paralysis

Infection, Guillain Barre syndrome, Lyme disease, shingles, stroke, or a tumor are among the many other causes of facial paralysis. Spasms of the facial muscles, called hemifacial spasm, can cause symptoms similar to those of Bell's palsy. In rare cases, women develop a condition called facial hemiatrophy of Romberg, which entails loss of fatty tissue just under the skin. This disorder progresses slowly, resulting in facial atrophy and distortion.

Thyroid storm, or thyrotoxicosis, is an emergency life threatening event caused by a deluge of thyroid hormone dumped into the blood stream. This condition requires immediate medical attention or sudden death can be imminent. Thyrotoxicosis can manifest in people with untreated hyperthyroidism. Additionally, it can have an onset due to surgical procedures performed on the thyroid, trauma, as well as viral or bacterial infectious agents. The patient is admitted to the critical care unit of the hospital for intensive treatment and care.

Symptoms of Thyroid Storm (thyrotoxicosis):
Increased body temperature
Tachycardia (rapid heart rate)
Nausea/vomiting
Diarrhea
Heart palpitations
Heart failure
Pulmonary edema
Confusion
Seizure
Coma
Abdominal pain
Jaundice

\"face Mask\"

There is a large increase in blood thyroid hormone level, accompanied by fever as high as 106 degrees. This condition can be caused by the following factors that include:
Stopping the required hyperthyroidism medications without consulting with the health care professional
Ingesting too much of thyroid hormone causing an overdose
Radioactive iodine treatments
People with hyperactive thyroid conditions who are suffering from severe infection or illness
Myocardial infarction (heart attack) in a persons with hyperactive thyroid

Anyone who has an overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism can develop thyroid storm. It occurs when the thyroid secretes a large amount of thyroid hormone in a small amount of time.

Anyone with an overactive thyroid who has a fever, rapid heart beat, with confusion, disorientation, should be hospitalized immediately. A medical history will be taken and diagnostic testing will be performed to analyze:
Blood cell count
Electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium, and calcium
Blood sugar level
Thyroid hormone levels will also be tested
Liver function test

Treatment:
The goal of treatment in people suffering with thyroid storm is to decrease thyroid hormone levels, or to inhibit their production and release into the blood. This is accomplished in the following ways:

The administration of PTU and methimazole in high dosages, will inhibit production of thyroid hormone.
Sodium iodide, potassium iodide, or Lugol's solution can be administered to prevent the secretion of thyroxin. Beta blockers such as propranolol (Inderal, Inderal LA) to control heart rate, and IV steroids to enhance circulation.

Left untreated, thyroid storm treatment can result in:
Coma
Heart failure
Liver failure
Stroke
Death

Treatment also includes:
Administration of IV fluids and electrolytes
Oxygen via nasal cannula or face mask
Medication and cooling towels to control fever
Vitamins and Antibiotics
Iodine to block secretion of thyroid hormone
Kidney dialysis
Sedatives to induce rest
Propranolol and dexamethasone to block hormone synthesis
Antithyroid drugs and potassium iodine

If you have a hyperactive thyroid, it is important to take your medication as prescribed by your physician. You can prevent thyroid storm by following your doctor's orders. Knowing the signs and symptoms of thyroid storm can prevent treatment delay and enable you to call 911 right away.

Facing Rosacea - Natural Treatments That Help Reduce Breakouts and Treat Symptoms

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that produces areas of extreme redness of the face accompanied by hard red bumps and pustules on the forehead, cheeks and nose and in many cases the appearance of visible blood vessels on the nose and cheeks. In some cases, this condition can also cause watery eyes and a bulbous nose.

As many as 1 in 20 people may suffer from this condition and if left untreated it can lead to permanent skin damage. The medical community usually treats this condition with antibiotics but, more and more people are finding that natural treatments work just as well and often have fewer side effects. The best natural treatments for Rosacea is an all around natural approach that encompasses diet, proper care and cleaning of your skin and treatment of the skin during breakouts. Here are a few general tips that may help reduce the number of breakouts and help treat the symptoms of Rosacea.

Facial Face Mask

Avoid Those Things That Trigger Breakouts

It has been shown that exposure to hot temperatures, sun, wind, stress and strenuous exercise all trigger Rosacea breakouts so the first thing you should do in order to treat this condition naturally is avoid exposure to any of these things as much as possible. While you can't do much about the weather, you can avoid going out on hot days as much as possible and try and stay cool. Stay out of the sun and when you must be out in the sun wear sun block to protect your face from the sun's UV rays. Avoid as much stress as possible and find ways to manage and reduce the stress you do have. By avoiding and limiting your exposure to the conditions that trigger breakouts you can significantly reduce the frequency of Rosacea breakouts.

Eat Healthy

There are many foods that can also trigger Rosacea breakouts. Two of the worst offenders is spicy food and alcohol avoid these two foods completely. In addition, make a journal of what you eat and discover what foods are personal triggers for your breakouts, avoid these foods as much as possible.

Chose a healthy balanced diet that contains plenty of fruits and vegetables especially those high in Vitamin A and B. Drink plenty of water and if necessary take vitamin B supplements as it has been shown that many people with Rocacea suffer from low Vitamin B in their systems.

Proper Cleaning Of Your Skin

In order to both reduce the frequency of Rosecea breakouts and to treat the symptoms when breakouts occur it is important to properly clean your skin. Choosing to use natural or homemade soap containing no perfumes or additives is one way to avoid drying out your skin which makes the symptoms or Rosecea worse. An all natural soap contains glycerin that will help keep your skin from drying out. Choosing a soap with natural rose often soothes and cools the skin as well.

When washing, never use hot water, instead use lukewarm water and your finger tips to clean your face, rinse then rinse again in cold water and pat your face dry with a clean towel. Never, rub your face as this may irritate the skin especially during a Rosecea breakout. Remember the cooler you can keep your skin, the better the chance are of avoiding a breakout and if a breakout does occur keeping your face cool may help reduce the symptoms resulting in a less severe breakout than you have experienced before.

Treating Breakouts

There are a number of natural ways to treat Rosecea breakouts and help reduce the worst of the symptoms. These treatments range from facial masks to herbal treatments that various people have used with various degrees of success. Finding the right natural treatment for you may take some time as it can only be done by trial and error. However, here are a few treatments that many people have found to be effective in relieving some of the symptoms of Rosecea.

Facial Masks That Help Cool The Face And Reduce Redness

Many sufferers of Rosecea find that making a face mask of natural ingredients often helps to reduce some of the redness caused by this condition and in some cases helps to clean up the break outs much faster than without their use. Here are two face masks that some people find to be effective.

Oatmeal and Yogurt face masks consists of mixing fine oatmeal into yogurt and forming a face mask. Apply it to the face and let dry and then rinse off with clean luke warm water, rinse face again with cool water and pat dry. Do this twice a day.

You can also make a face mask of raw egg white and lemon. Beat it to a froth and apply it your face, allow to dry and then rinse off with luke warm water and pat dry.

Other Treatments

Applying aloe straight from the aloe plant has been reported by some Rosecea suffers to help reduce both the redness and the hard red bumps on the cheeks, forehead and nose as well as providing a cooling feeling to the affected area. Also some people have reported that steeping green tea in a small amount of hot water and then allowing to cool and applying with a cotton swap to the affected area helps cool and reduce some of the redness.

For those who experience gritty and watery eyes with their Rosecea flareups some sufferers have reported that sliced fresh cucumber soaked in milk and placed on closed eyelids provide some relief. Also natural cucumber creams may provide some relief to the red areas of the skin.

In addition there are a number of herbal remedies that people have tried with varying degrees of success in the treatment of this condition.

Rosacea is a chronic condition for which there is no known cure, but by avoiding those conditions and foods that trigger breakouts, eating a well balance diet and treating the symptoms promptly you can reduce the frequency of breakouts and shorten the length of breakouts when they do occur naturally.

Some of the best thickening hair products can be made at home yourself. Homemade hair treatments such as masks give you control over what you're putting on your fine strands and scalp. They also provide a lot of fun as you are able to experiment with different natural ingredients such as fruit, essential oils, and organic extracts. To improve effectiveness and to optimize results, use the following recipes at least once a week.

Facial Face Mask

Take one ripe banana and mash creating a thick consistency, mix in one egg and blend until smooth, use a hand mixer if possible. Add one half cup of flat beer, then a tablespoon of honey, and blend for a creamy consistency. Apply the conditioning mask generously ensuring that you've applied to all of your hair as well as the scalp. Let this sit on your hair for a few hours and then use a mild shampoo when ready to wash out.

Natural Protein Recipe for Thicker Hair

Use this all-natural conditioner to pump up the volume on those fine locks by applying plain mayonnaise with a beaten egg. To add some moisture, mix in a little honey and olive oil (about a tablespoon of each). Let this sit on your main for 30 minutes and shampoo it out with a moisturizing shampoo. Remember that this recipe has quite a bit of protein which can make the hair a little stiff and hard. It is critical that after shampooing that you proceed with a moisturizing conditioner. This ensures that you won't experience dryness which can lead to breakage.

De-Frizz Recipe

Does your tresses have frizz? Don't worry this recipe is sure to have those frizzies tamed in no time! To make this de-frizz mask take ½ cup of honey, ½ cup of yogurt and one tablespoon of almond oil. Combine the ingredients together and massage in to hair from root to ends. Egg and Beer Homemade Hair Mask

Yep, here's another recipe that calls for beer. Why beer? Beer has properties that help to thicken thin hair, gives the appearance of fullness with volume, and succulence! It also contains proteins that provide shine as well as make the hair look healthy! Take one egg and separate the yoke from the white. Using only the yolk, blend with about 50ML of beer, ensuring that they are mixed very well. Apply to damp hair, cover with a plastic shower cap, wrap head with a towel and let sit for 30 minutes. Then shampoo the mixture out, rinse well, and proceed with applying a moisturizing conditioner.
