Using PVC Pipe

PVC Pipe is a versatile form of pipe which has revolutionized modern plumbing. PVC can be used for drainage, waste water or vent piping but is not suitable for water supply, in which case, copper pipe is most commonly used.

PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride which is a compound designed for strength and durability. It is resistant to corrosive materials found in cleaners and other household chemicals and also to the extremes of hard and soft water. It resists leakage and does not conduct electricity. For these reasons it is the common choice for modern plumbing and for replacing old plumbing.

There are many different sizes, lengths and diameters of PVC pope available. Pipes are designed to fit within each other and fixed with solvent cement. PVC pipes are measured by their inside diameter.

A coupling is the term used to describe a join between two pieces of PVC pipe, in particular when they are joined with no angle. Joins can be of varying degrees however, typically they are 22, 45, 60 and 90 degrees. An angled join is generally called an elbow.

Transition pieces are available to allow connection with other types of piping. A threaded adapter is available which will allow joining between threaded galvanized pipe. For connecting to non threaded metal pipe a gasket can be used which threads over both ends of pipe and is then secured in place using stainless steel clamps.

When fitting PVC pipes be sure to wear protective eye wear and a mask. Cut using a PVC hand saw and then use a deburring tool or the tip of the saw to remove any rough edges, especially from the inside of the pipe. Dry fit the pipes together to ensure that they are a good fit before applying solvent cement. Mark out exactly where the pipes will be joined together as once you apply the cement you will need to act quickly.

Joining PVC pipes is a two step process. Firstly a primer is applied, which cleans the area and begins a chemical reaction with the pipe. Spread primer on the outside of the pipe and on the inside of the fitting. Next spread cement over the same areas of the piping. Once the cement has been applied insert the pipe and hold for a few seconds for the cement to set. Always work in a well ventilated area and wear a face mask, as these chemicals can have quite a powerful odor. Run some water through the join to ensure that a good seal has been made.

How to Treat Anchor Worms on Goldfish

Anchor worms are another external parasites that often affects goldfish and other types of fish that is quite common. Anchor worms often referred to as Lernaea cyprinacea, a common copepod parasite which are small crustaceans. These parasites are mostly found on pond raised fish but if left untreated they can cause serious damage to your fish not only in population of parasites but the secondary bacterial infections that can arise as well after the parasites attach themselves to the body of the goldfish. What happens is that they pierce the body feeding on tissue and fluids that causes more bacterial infections to set in. The good news is that it's not very hard to learn how to treat anchors worms on goldfish or any other type of fish in fact. These parasites are very treatable as there are many treatment medications on the market today to choose from. Here I will show you many different ways on how to treat your goldfish for anchor worms.

Removing Anchor Worms with Tweezers

This method of treatment for anchor worms is not one that I will suggest people to use. You will however be able to see these worms found on your goldfish as they are like small green hairlike parasites seen attached to your goldfish. They are quite easily seen and can be removed with tweezers but the only thing wrong with this method is you don't see all the small worms that could be attached to the goldfish already which are beginning to grow. Anchor worms start off small that end up turning into larger worms as they begin to feed on the body fluid of the goldfish which then you will see later on without a microscope. This method may work but you will never know if they reproduced in your tank or pond and are just waiting to find a new host.

Anchor Worm Treatment Medication

In order to know for sure you have rid yourself of anchor worms once and for all people should strongly use fish medication to eliminate these external parasites. There are many types of fish medications on the market and here are just a few people can choose: Anchors Away, Dimilin, Proform LA and Potassium Permanganate. These anchor worm treatment medications work great and will eliminate the parasites affecting your fish.

Anchors Away

To treat your fish using anchors away make sure you always follow the manufacturers recommended dosage. Here is how you treat your fish using this medication:

1. Perform a 25% water change before treatments.
2. Always make sure you remove the activated carbon from your filter.
3. Add one teaspoon for every 40 gallons
4. Treat every 6 days for up to 3 weeks

Anchors away is a great product and effective at eliminating anchor worms and other parasites as well. You will notice after the first week of treatment that they will be falling off your goldfish.

Dimilin

Dimilin is another great product on the market that will treat fish suffering from anchor worms. Here is how you treat your goldfish for anchor worms using Dimilin:

1. Shake bottle very well before use.
2. Remove activated carbon.
3. Add 1 tablespoon for every 60 gallons
4. Wait 14 days to see if anchor worms are completely gone
5. If not, repeat dosage again and do not do a water change.
6. After second treatment is complete, wait another 14 days to make sure parasites are eliminated then perform a water change removing some of the chemical.

Proform LA

This is one of the best forms of treatment for anchor worms and fish lice on the market. It is really safe for humans to use and is a very low maintenance method of treatment. What's great about Proform LA is that it can be used in any water temperature where some can only be used as low as 50 degrees fahrenheit. You can do three treatments one week apart and it's a fairly low cost medication to use as 1 pint will treat 5000 gallons and 1 quart will treat 10,000 gallons of water. This anchor worm medication will not harm turtles, frogs or snails. Follow recommended dosage

Potassium Permanganate

This method of treatment should only be used by experienced fish keepers. This is a very strong medication that if done improperly will kill all your fish. Beware this can cure your goldfish or other fish from anchor worms but it can easily kill them too. With any medication that you use people should always use extreme caution wearing eye goggles, long sleeve clothes and a face mask when possible. Never inhale by these medications and always work in a well ventilated area. The slightest small crystal of potassium permanganate if it got into your eye can cause severe irritation and possible blindness. So please be careful when working with any form of medication. Again this form of medication should only be used by qualified people as other forms are easier to use and less risky. Here is how you treat with potassium permanganate:

1. Make sure you bypass your filter and shut off your UV sterilizer before treatment.
2. Make sure aeration is at top level.
3. Wear necessary protective equipment before adding treatment
4. Add 1 gram per 100 gallons or 1 teaspoon for every 600 gallons of water.
5. Wait till water turns brown
6. Add 1 pint of hydrogen peroxide per 1000 gallons. This will clear your water in not time and replenish oxygen to your water.
7. Turn on your filter again and UV sterilizer.

This method should be done up to three times to make sure you have eliminated all anchor worms and any other parasites that may be in the water. When you add hydrogen peroxide to the water it removes all effectiveness of the potassium permanganate. So in case of over dosage simply add hydrogen peroxide and your fish will be okay. Wait about 3 days before repeating treatment as the hydrogen peroxide may still be in the water making a new treatment ineffective. After 3 days you should be good to go for another treatment.

Now here I have covered several different ways at treating goldfish for anchor worms. Each medication is different and some are easier to use then others. Just make sure you use the one that you feel more comfortable with. Each of these above methods of anchor worm treatment will work. Just follow the manufacturers recommended dosage and your fish will soon be free of anchor worms.

As people become more aware of the environmental damage around them, they have become more concerned about pesticide safety. While minimizing pesticide use is always a good idea, there are times when a pesticide is the only thing that will take care of your problem. Pesticides can be used safely, with a few precautions. Making sure the pesticide you use is the right one for your problem, understanding the risks of a given pesticide, and following the label will help you safely use pesticides around your family and pets.

Although pesticide means insecticide to most people, it is really an umbrella term that covers a broad variety of substances that are intended to prevent, destroy, repel, or mitigate pests. Insecticides kill insects and other bugs. Herbicides kill plants. Fungicides kill fungus. Poisons, such as rat bait, kill animals. Plant growth regulators prevent plants from growing normally or at all, depending on the product. Insect growth regulators do the same for insects that pass through stages, such as the dreaded grasshopper. Defoliants and desiccants cause plants to drop their leaves. These are often used on cotton and other crops that are mechanically harvested.

All pesticides are poisonous. Some pesticides are extremely poisonous and are only sold to individuals who have a pesticide applicator's license. Other pesticides are sold in high concentrations and are intended for commercial use, where they are diluted by thousands of gallons of water. Before you buy a pesticide, make sure it is the appropriate product for your problem. For example, if you use an insecticide on a plant that is infested with insects because it has a fungus, not only will you not solve the root problem (pardon the pun), but you will wipe out all of your beneficial insects along with your problem insects. Once you have identified the pest you are dealing with, you must find a pesticide that will kill that pest. Sometimes that is easy. Rat bait kills mice. Other times that is not easy. There are not a lot of pesticides that can be used on vegetables, particularly around harvest time.

Remember that all the information you need to know about a pesticide is on the label. In fact, federal law specifies what must appear on a pesticide label. It also specifies that using a product in a way that does not appear on the label is a violation of federal law. For instance, Seven Dust ® 7% says that it kills fleas and ticks and may be used on dogs and humans. The label specifically tells you not to use this product on cats. They lick themselves, ingest the product, and die. If you put Seven Dust ® 7% on your cat, or your neighbor's cat, you have violated federal law. You can face civil and criminal charges, especially if someone or something gets ill or dies as a result of your actions.

To safely use a pesticide, make sure you obey every instruction on the label. If the label calls for long sleeves, long pants, gloves, a hat, and a face mask, make sure that is what you wear when applying the chemical, even if it is hot outside. After you apply your chemical, immediately remove your clothes as soon as you get inside, put those clothes in the washing machine alone, and run them in the hottest water the fabric will stand. After you remove the clothes, run the washing machine again on hot water while it is empty. This keeps any of the pesticide from getting on clothes other family members use, which could make them sick. If your pets lay on the contaminated clothing, they could become ill or die, too.

One of the most important parts of the label discusses the re-entry period. This is the period that must pass before you or anyone else can go back into an area that has been treated. This ranges from a few minutes to as long as 72 hours. Make sure that children and pets stay out, too. Since pets have fur, they can get soaked in the pesticide, leave the treated area, and continue to be exposed to the pesticide. They may also contaminate areas in the house and any family members who touch them. This greatly increases the results of toxic side effects for everyone exposed.

Pesticides help us grow more food than any other country in the world. They keep diseases spread by pests, such as the bubonic plague, at bay and make our lives much more pleasant. If used properly, they pose very little risk to yourself, your families, and your pets. Always follow the label directions and obey the re-entry period, and use a little common sense, and you and your family will enjoy a pest free home and garden with your pet in safety.

What is Thyrotoxicosis (Thyroid Storm) - Symptoms and Treatments

Thyroid storm, or thyrotoxicosis, is an emergency life threatening event caused by a deluge of thyroid hormone dumped into the blood stream. This condition requires immediate medical attention or sudden death can be imminent. Thyrotoxicosis can manifest in people with untreated hyperthyroidism. Additionally, it can have an onset due to surgical procedures performed on the thyroid, trauma, as well as viral or bacterial infectious agents. The patient is admitted to the critical care unit of the hospital for intensive treatment and care.

Symptoms of Thyroid Storm (thyrotoxicosis):
Increased body temperature
Tachycardia (rapid heart rate)

Anyone with an overactive thyroid who has a fever, rapid heart beat, with confusion, disorientation, should be hospitalized immediately. A medical history will be taken and diagnostic testing will be performed to analyze:
Blood cell count
Electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium, and calcium
Blood sugar level
Thyroid hormone levels will also be tested
Liver function test

Treatment:
The goal of treatment in people suffering with thyroid storm is to decrease thyroid hormone levels, or to inhibit their production and release into the blood. This is accomplished in the following ways:

The administration of PTU and methimazole in high dosages, will inhibit production of thyroid hormone.
Sodium iodide, potassium iodide, or Lugol's solution can be administered to prevent the secretion of thyroxin. Beta blockers such as propranolol (Inderal, Inderal LA) to control heart rate, and IV steroids to enhance circulation.

Left untreated, thyroid storm treatment can result in:
Coma
Heart failure
Liver failure
Stroke
Death

Treatment also includes:
Administration of IV fluids and electrolytes
Oxygen via nasal cannula or face mask
Medication and cooling towels to control fever
Vitamins and Antibiotics
Iodine to block secretion of thyroid hormone
Kidney dialysis
Sedatives to induce rest
Propranolol and dexamethasone to block hormone synthesis
Antithyroid drugs and potassium iodine

If you have a hyperactive thyroid, it is important to take your medication as prescribed by your physician. You can prevent thyroid storm by following your doctor's orders. Knowing the signs and symptoms of thyroid storm can prevent treatment delay and enable you to call 911 right away.
