Facial Steps - How to Do a Home Facial For Dry, Normal and Oily Skin

Knowing how to do a home facial using your favorite homemade facial recipes is a brilliant way of giving your skin a quick pick-me-up, to exercise it by activating circulation and for bringing nutrients and oxygen to the surface. You can do a home facial using homemade face masks or you can do a steam facial. Nearly all face masks contain a high percentage of water; the rapid evaporation that follows application causes them to be cooling, soothing and contracting. Doing a home facial is an excellent way to pamper yourself, relax, and improve your complexion.

Follow these professional steps to do a home facial, it takes about half an hour.

Facial

Step 1 Smooth your hair away from your face and neck, tie or clip it back out of the way.

Facial Steps - How to Do a Home Facial For Dry, Normal and Oily Skin

Step 2 Apply a cleanser using skin contouring motions (see below):

Neck: use long alternating strokes from your collar bone to jaw line.
Cheeks: from the centre line, smooth upward and outward from your chin to your ears, nose to temples; stroke your nose bridge downwards and the sides outwards.
Forehead: stroke upward, in high arcs to your hairline.
Eyes: using one tip, finger pat, starting in the centre between your eyes, making a semi-circle going outward both above and below your eyes.

Step 3 Tissue or rinse off depending on cleanser.

Step 4 With a cotton wool pad, apply your toner to remove last traces of the cleanser.

Step 5 Dot a light moisturizer on your forehead, cheeks and chin; blend in.

Step 6 Rinse with clear lukewarm water.

Step 7 Apply a mask all over your face and throat; leave a free circle around your tender eye area.

Step 8 Cover your eyes with cotton wool pads soaked in milk or a non-alcoholic freshener. Leave the mask on and relax lying down for 20 minutes.

Step 9 After 20 minutes remove all traces of the mask, blot your face and throat with a towel; finish off with a thin film of moisturizer.

Homemade Facial Recipes

You can use the following natural homemade facial recipes when do a home facial; leave them on for a minimum of 20 minutes, and then thoroughly rinse off with clean lukewarm water.

Crushed strawberries: use them alone or mixed with oatmeal.
Ripened pears: give an astringent action to oily skin.
Cabbage leaves: apply the juice from a few green cabbage leaves.
Cucumber mask: grind or mash enough to cover your face; this is refreshing.
Honey mask: 2 tablespoons of honey and ½ teaspoon of lemon juice or cider vinegar.
Brewers' yeast facial: 1 teaspoon of powdered yeast and 2 teaspoons of warm water; adjust consistency so it spreads like a paste.
The beaten white of an egg - with the optional addition of ¼ teaspoon of lemon juice or cider vinegar; good for oily or balanced skin.
Another version of an egg-white facial is to beat it with a tablespoon of skimmed milk.
Mix an egg yolk, a few drops of cider vinegar and a little vegetable oil; good for dry skin.

Steam Facial

You will find giving yourself a steam facial is stimulating. Steam encourages the pores to push out dirt and impurities; it promotes perspiration and stimulates circulation.

If you have sensitive skin or broken veins do not be tempted to do a home facial without seeking advice from a professional first.

Steaming with herb infusions is most beneficial. Pour boiling water over herbs in a bowl; make a towel into a head tent and steam your face over the bowl for 10 minutes. Blot your skin dry, tone, then moisturize.

The following herbs cans be used individually when you do a home facial or combined for your homemade steam facial:

For cleansing, soothing: camomile, lady's mantle, nettle, rosemary, thyme.
For tightening: peppermint, elderflower, tincture of benzoin, gum arabic.
For drying: yarrow.
For healing: leek, comfrey, fennel.

When the mask is taken off, you will notice the blood vessels have expanded and your skin looks rosier; fluid from the enlarged blood vessels plumps up the inner layer, smoothing the skin and compressing the pores.

There will be a definite improvement in the appearance of your skin, and although this 'mask effect' is temporary, the skin is exercised and stimulated.

Experiment with different facial masks to find which suits your skin the best.

Be warned though; don't do a home facial using a mask you haven't tried just before a major event such as your wedding or an important date. The action of the mask will bring all the impurities in your skin to the surface. This could mean you will have a mild breakout for a few days.

If you have oily skin you need to use a mask twice a week, if you have dry or normal skin, you only need to do a home facial once a week.

Facial Hair in Women - What Can You Do About It?

Facial hair growth in women is something that many of us find concerning. Assuming that you are not genetically inclined to facial air (Mediterranean, Jewish and Eastern European ancestry) or have a family history of facial hair growth in women), it could be a number of things.

One of the most common is hormonal imbalance. Women have both estrogens and androgens (male hormones). As we age, the levels of both hormones naturally decline. However, the ratio between the differences declines and it can look as if we suddenly have more of the male hormones, and therefore stray hairs. In addition, there are some medications that can stimulate the growth of stray, darker, coarser hair such as phenytoin, cyclosporine, anabolic steroids, combination medications with testosterone such as estratest, and minoxidil (used for high blood pressure as well as baldness in men).

Facial

Sometimes though, excessive facial/body hair can be a result of physical and medical issues. For example, polycystic ovarian syndrome and obesity (adipose tissue can produce androgens). Occasionally it can be related to adrenal tumors. In these cases one will see more than just the occasional stray hair on the face. If this is happening to you, see your health care provider.

Facial Hair in Women - What Can You Do About It?

So what can do you about it? Women have been looking for ways to permanently remove hair for years. There does not seem to be an easy fool-proof permanent way to deal with facial hair.

Treatments include:

  • Makeup Radio frequency
  • Hormones (estrogen and progesterone)
  • Shaving
  • Waxing
  • Laser
  • Electrolysis
  • Medications - Vaniqua - a prescription cream

According to many dermatologists, electrolysis seems to be the only method for permanent removal. Vaniqua, which is relatively new in the past few years does not seem to work for all women. The long term effectiveness is unknown at this time.

As with most things, there does not seem to be a one-size-fits-all solution to the problem of the stray facial hair. You will most likely need to try various treatments and see what works for you. However, keep in mind if the hair seems excessive or you have concerns, please speak with your health care provider for further evaluation.

Does Collagen Facial Cream Really Work?

Before you buy a collagen facial cream, let me give you a little advice. If you believe the advertising hype, collagen creams will reduce wrinkles, increase firmness and make you look younger. But, how or why would they work?

There are five layers of epidermis and two layers of dermis that make up the skin. Constant cellular activity goes on in these layers. Below those seven layers is subcutaneous tissue containing fat, which often becomes thinner with age. But, it is the health of the epidermis that we are primarily concerned with, when it comes to our appearance and the question is, does a collagen facial cream support it.

Facial

95% of the cells in the epidermis are composed of keratin proteins. The other five percent serve various functions, including fighting infection. None of the cells of the epidermis are composed of collagens. Those proteins are only found in the dermis of the skin.

Does Collagen Facial Cream Really Work?

Collagen creams are basically gelatin. You may recall a time when eating gelatin was recommended to strengthen the fingernails or improve the appearance of the skin. Dietary supplements containing collagens derived from chicken bones and other sources are promoted for the same purpose, as well as improving the function of the joints.

If you had a protein deficiency, then they might help. But, generally speaking, taking those supplements has never been shown to provide any health benefit. Applying collagen creams is much the same thing.

Any "change" that you see in your appearance is strictly cosmetic. Collagen facial cream might make you look better for a short period of time, but even that benefit is questionable.

Most of the companies that do include the protein in their lotions only include a very small amount. The majority of the product is composed of water combined with petrolatum, glycerin, mineral oil or some other "oily" solution. You can see this when you read an ingredients label.

The ingredients are listed in descending order, from the highest concentration to the lowest, unless there is an ingredient that is considered an active pharmaceutical. Then it, as well as the percentage found in the concentration, will be at the top of the list.

When you read the labels for collagen creams, you will see that the protein is listed far down on the list. In one of the popular brands, it is the 24th ingredient, far behind all of the artificial preservatives and petrochemicals.

A good alternative to a collagen facial cream is one that contains Functional Keratin, which has been shown to stimulate the production of new cells, replenishing those that have been lost to time. Collagen creams do not contain the nutrients necessary to stimulate the production of cells, or anything else.

They cannot make the fibers lie in the dermis stronger. They can only make your face look shiny. Basically, buying collagen facial cream is not your best choice for wrinkle reduction, improved firmness or delaying the signs of getting older. Luckily, we have options. Please take a look at my website now.

Can You Get Rid of Nasolabial Folds?

As we age, many changes take place to our faces, including the development of the NL fold. The reasons for most NL folds is threefold: One, the malar (cheek) fat pads tend to move downwards and inwards- some say under the influence of gravity, and others blame the general breakdown of supportive structures such as collagen and elastin. Shrinkage of the facial bones may also be a factor. In women whose upper palate is small, and therefore doesn't "push out" the soft tissues that overlie it, may also have deeper folds. Breakdown of the skin's support structures, whether or not one's malar pads have descended, results in NL creases that resemble parenthesis lines (as opposed to deeper clefts). Sleeping on one's tummy or side, with the face scrunched into the pillow, or simply resting against it can also worsen folds. This is why one fold is often deeper than the other, depending on which side we sleep.

Cosmetic surgeons will tell you that even a mid face-lift will do little to improve the NL area -at least for the long term. There may be a slight and temporary lifting of the area, but the malar fat pad will soon move downwards and inwards again. Some surgeons are injecting fat into the area during a face lift but, again, this fat tends to be resorbed over a matter of weeks. Another option is an ePTFE (non reactive) implant. These are tubular and generally inserted through two small cuts made in the NL area

\"Facial Massage\"

How we treat the NL fold in order to improve its appearance depends very much on what has caused the fold. In the case of a deep cleft, dermal fillers are a guaranteed way to see improvement, coupled with facial exercises that elevate the zygomaticus muscles, drawing up the malar cheek pad. (Some women have reported a worsening of the fold after doing facial exercises, but this effect generally reverses shortly after they stop. If you have NL folds, I would also avoid the exercises that engage the orbicularis oris muscle, as this can build up fast, in doing so, causing the outer upper lip area to stand out similar to that of a monkey.)

Can You Get Rid of Nasolabial Folds?

Women with more of a line or wrinkle in the NL area (parenthesis lines) are somewhat luckier as using a skin cream with targeted active ingredients can reduce early-stage lines. Active ingredients that work include peptides and Retin-A. Don't be afraid to really work the product into the fold by massaging upwards using a firm touch. Despite what many dermatologists might tell you, facial massage does not worsen wrinkles or parenthesis lines.

Some women have reported that using a skin roller (a gadget that resembles a miniature paint-roller with short needles sticking out from it) in the NL area has helped reduce the fold. This is quite likely since, if the spikes penetrate deep enough, the gadget behaves somewhat like a fractional laser, causing channels of damage that fill in with fresh collagen. The attraction of lymph to the damaged area will also cause a temporary improvement in the folds.
Recently, threads on unsponsored skincare forums have been touting the use of "green foods" to reduce nasolabial folds. While evidence is purely anecdotal, enough women have seen a difference to warrant further investigation. It is possible that a shift in internal pH caused by the ingestion of alkaline-causing green drinks helps reduce sagging in general. The weight loss that often accompanies the taking of greens drinks may also contribute to the "shrinking" of the malar fat pad and therefore its impact on deeper, cleft-like folds.

Here are the most effective ways to reduce nasolabial folds:

1. If you have clefts as opposed to parenthesis lines, do try facial exercise. There are a number of reputable programs available for download.
2. Don't over-exfoliate. Every layer of the epidermis has its function. Over-exfoliating-exfoliating may cause a thinned epidermis that provides less of a "girdle" effect, i.e. less tautness.
3. Use a skin cream that contains actives such as peptides (to increase cellular communication) and collagen boosters. Be careful of drugstore creams as they rarely contain enough active ingredient to really impact the skin.
4. Consider a dermal filler (injectable) Start with a temporary filler, as you want to make sure you like the result before having a semi-permanent or permanent filler.
5. If you are fine with the thought of ePFTE in your body, and have done your "due diligence" consider a tubular implant.
6. If your folds are not the deep line variety, use a lighter concealer within them, covered by a light-reflecting makeup. (Not a shimmery base as this will emphasize them.) A department store cosmetic consultant for any of the major brands will be able to point you to a light-reflecting makeup.
7. Some women are claiming a facial exercise/muscle stimulating works to lessen the folds. Also, a few report that an amber light device has helped.

Aestheticians - Who Are They and What Do They Do

Aestheticians, also spelled estheticians, are skin care specialists. They are not dermatologists nor any type of doctor, by any means. Aesthetician is pronounced "es-thi-tish-uhn," and is derived from the word aesthetic, whose root is a Greek word meaning "to perceive, to feel" (from the Online Etymology Dictionary). Now, aesthetic seems to refer to a sense of the beautiful, or a sense of what is pleasing.

So, what does an aesthetician do?

\"Facial Massage\"

Have you ever wondered if there was a better kind of makeup for your skin type? Have you ever questioned what condition your skin was in, and if you were buying the right kind of moisturizer and toner? An aesthetician does all that and more. Not only can he/she tell you what condition your skin is in, but also how to improve it. Usually, a certified aesthetician has access to products that you cannot find at other beauty stores. Laws regarding aestheticians are still in a state of flux and vary buy state, though there are some federal guidelines. Here are some other things an aesthetician may be able to help you with depending on your own state regulations:

Aestheticians - Who Are They and What Do They Do

Skin Treatments

An aesthetician is trained to handle facial massages in a way to improve your skin's appearance, to relieve stress, and to just feel good. If you have never had a facial massage, it is a great experience! Also, an aesthetician has learned about chemical exfoliation and how to administer it in a healthy way. Aestheticians also must learn about common plastic surgical procedures in order to understand how to follow up. Some learn about manual lymph drainage for this purpose, but I do not know how common it is in the United States.

Body Treatments

Again, this includes chemical exfoliation, but also includes body masks and body wraps. Some body wraps are dehydrating, explaining the loss of water weight afterward. Your aesthetician should know about the different kinds, and know how to prepare you for it healthily, advising you to drink plenty of water beforehand, etc. Another skill that aestheticians acquire is on hydrotherapy. This includes foot baths and arm baths, as well as douches. A douche is a steady stream of water applied in a certain pattern over a part of the body. This works much like a massage in that it pinpoints specific areas to relieve stress and muscle pain.

Hair Removal

Any body can tweeze their eyebrows, but not many of us are trained to know how to shape our eyebrows so that they complement our face. Many times we know what we don't want our eyebrows to look like, though we don't know what we do want them to. An aesthetician is trained to be able to analyze your face shape and your eyebrow arch to come out with the best possible combination. While she is not trained to administer electrolysis or laser hair removal, she should know enough about it to be able to answer your questions.

It is also important to know what an aesthetician is not certified to do, so that you can protect yourself. They are not to puncture or wound the skin in any way that may draw blood. This includes popping a closed zit. Also, they are not to provide you with any advice concerning the treatment of medical diseases.

Aestheticians are there to give advice on what is cosmetically appealing in general, but it is your job to know what you like. Also, it is important for you to watch carefully to make sure they are following basic sanitary guidelines. Aestheticians are great resources when exploring the world of skin care, having been trained and then possibly having gone through an apprenticeship, much like the way electricians are certified. They know the products and can help you figure out what is right for you.
